The station wagon came up over a ridge, and the expansive view of the ocean came into view just as the sun was beginning to set. There was no more road. It simply terminated on a sandy, grass-fringed dune just above a trail that led down to the beach. The Mister turned off the engine, and the three of them silently climbed out of the car. No one was able to take their eyes off of the setting sun. The cobalt sea lightened to a pale blue then slowly began to turn to molten gold as they stood side by side, collectively holding their breaths.
A warming breeze tousled Chris’s hair. It seemed to him to be flowing from far out at sea, from the sun itself. Without looking down, he felt The Mister and Missus take his hands on either side. His heart was fairly breaking from the beauty of it all and the overwhelming sense of love that shined upon and enveloped him.
He began to cry.
And something in between that he certainly had never experienced before. The Mister and Missus squeezed his hands a bit harder, increasing even more the overpowering love he felt as the three gazed out across the sea.
